Dear Nigerians! First, this is to alert you to a recent outbreak of cholera in Nigeria in case you are yet to know about it. It is also to tell you all you need to know about the situation so that it does not affect you and your family and does not get worse across the country.
1. The Epidemic Has Spread To Up To 30 States Out Of 37
As of June 17, BBC News Pidgin quoted NCDC as saying that cases of the epidemic had been reported in 30 out of 36 states, including 96 local government areas across the country.
This is contrary to most other media reports suggesting that the epidemic is still confined to Lagos. So, be careful because it might be around you already.
Note: We said ‘30 out of 37 states’ because this is an epidemic that does not know about political names. So, we are considering the FCT as one of the ‘states’.
2. The Strain Of The Current Outbreak Is More Aggressive Than The Previous Years’
Premium Times reported two days ago that this years’ cholera strain in Nigeria is a “subtype known as Serovars 01”. The media house quotes the Lagos State Commissioner of Health Akin Abayomi as saying that this Serovars 01 is “highly aggressive and contagious, with the potential for widespread”.
So, it calls for added vigilance because things might not be as in previous years.
3. The Cholera Outbreak Has Spread To Most Places In Nigeria
The BBC report quoted earlier, apart from saying that cases had been reported in 30 out of 36 states, also made a categorical statement that According“di places wia this disease never reach for Nigeria dey very few”.
Mind you that this report came 3 days ago. And with the revelation that the current cholera strain is more aggressive than normal, you can expect that the spread must have gone much wider by now.
4. Know The Symptoms From The Right Sources
According to the World Health Organisation, here are the key facts everyone needs to know about cholera generally…
Bullet point 5 above shows that most of those affected by cholera either do not develop any symptoms at all or manifest only mild symptoms. This information is good because it will help us to panic less.
However, let us not forget that the relatively few cases that do manifest symptoms, “can kill within hours if left untreated” according to bullet point 1. Thus, we all need to be very alert to the symptoms because it means the situation is likely to make us easily lose guard and therefore lose someone long before we realize it.
So, what are the symptoms? According to the WHO source just quoted,
“among people who develop symptoms, the majority have mild or moderate symptoms. It takes between 12 hours and 5 days for a person to show symptoms. A minority of patients develop acute watery diarrhea with severe dehydration. This can lead to death if left untreated”.
So, let there be no panic. But let there be vigilance.
The US Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has a bit more detail on the symptoms of cholera as follows…
According to Google AI, shocks and seizures may also occur in rare severe cases of cholera.
5. What To Do As Soon As You Notice A Symptom Of Cholera Around You
The first thing you must do is, DON'T PANIC. See why: According to CDC, “with early and proper treatment, even people with severe cholera can survive”. So, the only wise thing to do when you notice symptoms of cholera around you is to seek a solution.
To get the right solution the fastest as advised, this is what you must know and do according to a 2019 public health advisory by Nigeria’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)...
How To Prevent Cholera From Getting To You At All?
This is the the most important question of all to ask. All the sources consulted on this question are unanimous in recommending basic hygiene as the way to prevent cholera. It’s as simple as...
Drinking clean water,
Washing fruits and vegetables in salt water before you consume them raw. Otherwise, cook or boil everything that is raw before consuming them.
Wash your utensils very well before using them.
Keep your food and water well covered
Keep your surroundings very clean
ABOVE ALL, spread this information like wild fire, even, share this now. The more people that know about it, the less the microbe spreads.
