WARNING: If you hate bitter truths a lot, kindly log out of this article now. It's a really short read but it is so realistic it could keep you thinking all day or year.
To start with, I have something highly praiseworthy to say about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today...
Nigerians may hate the man all they care. But, there are certain rare virtues you can't deny the Lion of Bourdillon. One of these is uncompromising doggedness. To say it in simpler language...
Anything Tinubu Wants, He Must Get It...
I used to be one of Tinubu's biggest fans during most of the PDP years. I loved him for his tenacious stay in the opposition when hordes of the weaker politicians were busy cross-carpeting to and from PDP (with Atiku Abubakar holding the ace).
My point here is to underscore the fact that Tinubu is easily the most tenacious Nigerian politician that ever God created. As you can see, the man weathered every storm of staying put in the opposition camp. Today, he is the President.
What The Tax Bill Outrage Further Reveals About Tinubu
I don't intend to keep you reading for long. So, let me spill the beans right away...
In Nigeria, the North seems to have the extraordinary skill to play the South like a flute. The only Southern exemption I see here are Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Olusegun Obasanjo. These are the only Southern politicians I know that the North doesn't control. Instead, these two control the North.
Thus, you all remember how Tinubu used his so-called mu-mu ticket to mumurize the North into supporting him for President. Now, especially with this controversial tax bill, it appears that the North is currently regretting that decision.
Tinubu knew that religion is the North's 'mumu button'. He pressed it, and it worked. Then, as he started constituting his cabinet, it became all too clear that the mu-mu ticket was only a trade-off, a Faustian bargain.
But, The North Should Have Seen It Coming
If not that religion blinded the North - as it blinds them in everything else - they should have seen this coming. I believe that Allah may have abandoned them to fall into the mistake for using his holy religion for unholy politics. But, that's by the way.
Now, why do I think that the North should have seen this coming? See why...
Only 2 years before becoming the Governor of Lagos State, this same Bola Ahmed Tinubu was reported to have publicly declared that he did not believe in one Nigeria:
2 years after that, Tinubu already worked his way to becoming the Governor of Nigeria's only city state.
So, it's likely that - as the master strategist - he eventually decided to work towards splitting the country as a political core insider. So, he started, not only by becoming the Governor of Lagos but also by carving out a unique niche for himself uncontrolled by anyone else.
Next, he doggedly worked to become the President. Now, he has become the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Now, it's all clear he doesn't mind if the country splits - which a significant number of Nigerians (especially the Biafrans) would applaud anyway.
The tax bill controversy has revealed that Tinubu has been in league with the Biafrans all these years in thinking that the North cheats the South perpetually based on how the country is structured. But, while the Biafrans took a combatant approach to it, Tinubu went the more subtle way.
Tinubu's unapologetic approach to his deeply regionized appointments - and now this tax bill - reveals he may never need the North again. That's because, he might gladly throw Nigeria up for disintegration, thereby becoming the last President of One Nigeria where the North exercises undue political influence that keeps everyone down from generation to generation.
