In his address to 17 African countries celebrating 50 years of independence from colonial rule in 2010, former Commonwealth scribe Kofi Anan described Africa as “a sleeping giant about to be woken”. In the speech entitled, 'The Next Generation Must Drive Africa's Renaissance', Anan basically highlighted enormous opportunities for great strides within the continent while making "a robust call for Africa’s leaders, citizens and partners to increase efforts to realize the continent’s potential".
It's a pity that after almost one and a half decade since the respected African diplomat made that call, Africa remains asleep, even getting sleepier.
The problem is that while Africa keeps sleeping, the rest of the world is advancing at a breath-taking speed. Therefore, by our projection, if nothing is done to effectively arrest this trend as soon as now, Africans will be reckoned in the next two to three generations as mere beasts of burden among any committee of humans.
If we fail to take the right steps in the right direction now, expect those coming generations of our offspring to curse our graves for being the world's most irresponsible ancestors ever. They will curse us for letting them become everyone's slave.
In line with this sense of urgency, Awake Digest basically exists to help wake up Africa by waking up Africans. To do this well, we adopt a number of strategies. For example...
We advocate for Africa’s marginal populations.
We help to connect Africans to opportunities available to the rest of the world.
We call out scams whether by big or small players.
We question cultures we consider destructive.
We criticize anti-progress mindsets.
In all these, we prioritize research and development.
We generally try to use information to liberate Africans from their perennially slumbersome existence.
